As we write this, 2025 looks grim, maybe one of the scariest starts to a new year that many of us can recall.
Trump, Musk, Putin … the war in the Ukraine, and right now the Californian wildfires continue to wreak their destructive force, with more than 24 lives lost, over 11,000 dwellings burned to the ground and over 14,000 hectares of scorched earth.
The election of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States represents nothing less than an existential threat to our planet home. He is, by any definition, a dictator.
As we write, not yet a week into his 4 year presidency, he has removed the US from the global climate agreement: The 2015 Paris Agreement; halted $US 300 billion in green infrastructure funding to the States of his country, declared that Trans people have no right to exist, and shut down the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs of the federal government. This affects not only gender and race inclusion, it is also a terrible blow for anybody dealing with any kind of disability.
We are up against it. The Tech giants don’t care, Elon Musk is an omnipresent advisor, and they have recently indicated that their platforms may be used to sow ever more disinformation and hate.
The number of populist national governments elected around the world via suspect processes of democracy is staggering and most of the multilateral negotiations designed to protect the environment in 2024, even before Trump made things inifinitely worse, failed miserably leading to 2024 being known as the year of the great ‘greenlash’.
Yet, we know that millions of people all over the globe care about the wellbeing of our world, and are willing to put themselves on the line in different ways to turn around these horrors.
We will need radical collaboration backed by radical accountability in new and unexpected alliances to counter this. We will need to rebuild trust and reboot multilateralism. Industry will need to enter into pre-competitive agreements at speed and scale. Civil society will need to work with progressive business interests. The billionaires who don’t like that the world is going to hell in a hand-basket will need to deliver substantial flows of structured finance to fund a different kind of global economy.
